Fire Safety Plan
Awareness of how you should act and react in a situation gives you more confidence to deal with the situation. A well-defined Fire Safety Plan increases a person’s ability to escape and help others.
- Steps you should take to prepare for a fire emergency:
- Know where the nearest fire alarms are in your building and learn how they work
- Know the location of emergency fire exits and where the stairs nearest to you lead to
- Keep emergency numbers such as security and first aid at a place where you can see them easily
- Know where the fire alarm pull stations are located near your area
- Learn how to activate a pull station
- Ensure that fire pulls, extinguishers and fire exits are not blocked
- Learn how your office’s fire alarm sounds
- Know who have been assigned as key personnel in the event of a fire
- Know the evacuation plan thoroughly
- Steps you should take when a fire is discovered:
- Follow the REACT strategy
- Remove persons in immediate danger if possible
- Ensure all departmental/area doors and windows are closed to confine the fire and smoke
- Activate the fire alarm system
- Call the fire emergency number to report the fire
- Try to extinguish the fire or concentrate on evacuation
- Steps you should take on hearing a fire alarm:
- Leave your workstation at once with the help of the emergency warden/key personnel
- Feel the door with the back of your hand before opening it, if it is cold then open it slowly
- Check for smoke in hallways and stairwells, if there is no smoke, quickly get to your building’s emergency fire exits and reach the Fire Assembly Point
- Steps you should take if trapped in smoke or heat:
- Before opening any door check if it’s warm or cold, if it is warm DO NOT OPEN IT
- Use rags, towels, clothes, tape, etc. to cover vents and cracks around doors to keep smoke out
- Cover your mouth with a dust mask or damp cloth to stop yourself from inhaling smoke
- Stay low on the floor
- Search a phone near you, call the fire department and tell them your exact location
- Wait at a window and signal for help
- Be patient and DO NOT panic
STOP -> DROP -> ROLL
Stop- Do not move if you are on fire, air feeds fire
Drop- Drop to the ground
Roll- Cover your face and roll around on the ground to put out the fire
Ensuring Fire Safety
We can categorize fire on the basis of its cause. The following figure shows the four classes of fire.
In a work environment, ensuring fire safety is not just the job of the employer, but a collaborative effort of both the employer and the employee. Yes, the employer has to provide the right equipments to deal with emergency situations but the prima facie effort comes from the people who are actually in that situation. Thus, it is extremely essential to make workers aware about fire hazards in the workplace and what to do in a fire emergency.
Basic Ways to Prevent Fire
- Keeping storage and work areas trash-free
- Using covered containers for keeping oily rags
- Storing flammable liquids in air-tight containers and not near any source of spark
- Refueling gasoline-powered equipments in well ventilated areas
- Using wire guard over utility lights
- Checking appliances if they emanate any strange odor
How to Use a Fire Extinguisher?
- PULL THE PIN- Twist the seal to break it and then remove
- AIM LOW- Point the nozzle or hose of extinguisher at the base of the flame
- SQUEZE THE HANDLES- Start the extinguisher by squeezing its handles
- SWEEP SIDE-TO-SIDE- Move the extinguisher slowly from side-to-side so that the extinguishing agent covers the fire
Fire Safety Do’s | Fire Safety Don’ts |
---|---|
Treat every alarm as an emergency | DO NOT assume that a fire alarm is just a mock drill |
DO remain in your room if you are unable to exit the building. Keep the door closed and await assistance from the fire department | DO NOT waste time in collecting personal items. Just collect your phone, keys and rush out |
Take account of your colleagues, neighbors and inform authorities in case they are missing | DO NOT use escalators in case of fire, stairwell is your escape route |
