Personality is defined as an individual’s unique way of feeling, thinking, and behaving. Personality is a result of the interaction and synergy between biological and environmental factors. There are multiple approaches and definitions of personality, such as trait-based, behavioral-based, etc. However, most personality definitions identify personality as a relatively stable set of behaviors, emotional composition, perception and intelligence.

Personality is a vast term and comprises of attitude, aptitude, motivation, opinions, reasoning, understanding, mood, and is most easily studied during social interactions. Thus, organizations have started assessing personality when making critical decisions regarding talent management. Measuring personality gives organizations a holistic view of an individual’s inherent and acquired traits that manifest in behavior and distinguish one person from another.

Personality assessments, as the name implies, gauge an individual’s positive and dark personality traits. Personality assessments are modeled after two broad schools of thought – trait theory and type theory. Type-based personality assessments characterize people according to certain qualitatively distinctive categories. These are more suitable for personal use. Trait-based personality assessments view personality as a function of multiple traits and measure the degree to which each trait is present in individuals. They are used for high-stake decisions in workplace settings.
