What Is PL/SQL?

PL/SQL (also known as procedural language extension to the Structured Query Language) is primarily a block-structured, procedural language. In the early 1990s, it was developed by Oracle Corporation. Oracle uses PL/SQL besides the other two languages, SQL and Java. Being an extension of SQL, it embeds the SQL queries in its syntax. PL/SQL also provides several iteration constructs to the SQL to overcome some constraints of SQL Language. It provides a holistic programming language solution for developing crucial applications on Oracle Databases.

It is a well-structured and easily comprehensible language. Its construct is sufficient to express the intention in the code clearly. Besides, PL/SQL is one of the easiest languages to learn. The language is aimed at combining procedural programming language and database language.

PL/SQL is a portable language for Oracle Database development. It’s easy to run PL/SQL apps on any OS and platform where Oracle Database has been deployed. Being an embedded language, it is only executable in an Oracle Database. It was not intended to be used as a standalone language. PL/SQL is a highly productive database language that lets you develop procedural/modular programs in Oracle Database.

Is PL different from SQL?

  • The main difference between two languages is that PL/SQL allows the block of code to be executed at once, whereas the SQL works on a single query at a time.
  • PL/SQL is the Procedural Language for SQL, whereas the SQL stands for Structured Query Language.
  • SQL queries find their use in retrieving data from the database, whereas PL/SQ is utilized to create applications that display the data retrieved by SQL.
  • PL/SQL enables you to write the programming block, which includes functions,  triggers, procedures,  variables, and packages within its syntax. However, SQL queries and commands needed to be written in DML (Data Manipulation Language) and  DDL (Data Definition Language).

What are the skills required for PL/SQL Developers?

  • Expertise in the Oracle database and tools
  • Understanding of PL/SQL triggers and packages
  • Knowledge of data modeling, data analysis, design and implementation
  • Awareness of the design and implementation of  ETL approach via ORACLE built-in functions

About Oracle PL/SQL Online Test

The Oracle PL/SQL test assesses aspirants' knowledge of PL/SQL statements, specific PL/SQL features, and relational database concepts. The purpose of this online test is to evaluate the knowledge and skills of candidates. A PL/SQL test is useful for pre-employment screening because it enables recruiters to make the right hiring decisions. A proficient backend developer/database admin working with the SQL Server database requires proper knowledge of PL/SQL. Test takers are required to take the PL/SQL assessment test before the second-round interviews. This test consists of a random set of multiple-choice questions about PL/ SQL.

The PL/SQL assessment test is useful for evaluating the below-mentioned relevant skills:

  • Working knowledge of SQL
  • Proficiency in .NET frameworks
  • In-depth understanding of SQL design skills
  • Knowledge of RDBMS concepts and database modeling
