Sample questions for general aptitude test with answers & explanation:

  1. Name a conjunction.
    Answer: ‘Because’ is an example of a conjunction.

  2. What per cent of 3.6kg is 72 gms?
    Answer: 2%
    Explanation:
    3.6kg=3.6×1000=3600g
    So, (72/3600)100=2%

  3. A travels 25% faster than B. They started their journey from point P to point Q and reached at the same time on point Q. The distance between P and Q is 85 km. On the way, however, A lost about 20 minutes while stopping for petrol. What was the speed of B?
    Answer: 51 km/hr.
    Explanation:  Given:
    A is faster the B = 25%
    Distance between point P and Q = 85 km
    Formula used: Distance = Speed × Time
    Let the speed of B = x km/hour

    Then the speed of A = (125/100) × x = 5/4 x

    According to the question:

    Time taken by B - Time taken by A = time lost by A
    85/x – 85/ (5/4) x = 20/60
    85/x - 340/5x = 1/3
     (425 – 340)/5x = 1/3
     x = 51 km/hour

  4. If you are in a race and overtake the second person. What position are you in now?
    Answer: If you overtake the second person, you take their place; therefore, you are now in second place.

  5. In a specific code, 'COMPUTER' is written as 'PMOCTUER'. How would 'KEYBOARD' be written in that code?
    Answer: This question tests pattern recognition. In the code, the letters are rearranged in pairs. So, 'KEYBOARD' would be written as 'EKYABDRO'.

  6. The population of the town was 1,60,000 three years ago. If it increased by 3%,2.5% and 5% respectively in the last three years, then what is the town's present population?
    Answer: 1,77,366.
    Explanation:  The initial population of the town three years ago was 1,60,000.
    Calculate the population after the first year (3% increase)
    Increase = 3% of 1,60,000 = (3/100) * 1,60,000 = 4,800
    Population after 1 year = Initial population + Increase = 1,60,000 + 4,800 = 1,64,800

    Now, we calculate the population after a 2.5% increase on the new population:
    Increase = 2.5% of 1,64,800 = (2.5/100) * 1,64,800 = 4,120
    Population after 2 years = 1,64,800 + 4,120 = 1,68,920

    Next, we calculate the population after a 5% increase on the new population:
    Increase = 5% of 1,68,920 = (5/100) * 1,68,920 = 8,446
    Population after 3 years = 1,68,920 + 8,446 = 1,77,366
    Hence, The present population of the town is 1,77,366

  7. The present ratio of ages of A and B is 4:5. Eighteen years ago, this ratio was 11:16. What is the total of their present ages?
    Answer: 90 years.
    Explanation:  Let the present age of A be 4x and the present age of B be 5x, based on the given ratio of their ages 4:5.

    18 years ago, the age of A would be 4x−18 and the age of B would be 5x−18. According to the problem, the ratio of their ages 18 years ago was 11:16. Therefore, we can set up the equation:
    4x−185x−18=1116

    Cross-multiplying gives us:
    16(4x−18)=11(5x−18)

    Expanding both sides results in:
    64x−288=55x−198

    Now, we will move all terms involving x to one side and constant terms to the other side:
    64x−55x=288−198
    This simplifies to:
    9x=90

    Dividing both sides by 9 gives:
    x=10

    Now, substituting x back into the expressions for the ages:
    - Present age of A: 4x=4×10=40
    - Present age of B: 5x=5×10=50

    Now, we can find the sum of their present ages:
    40+50=90

    The sum total of their present ages is 90

  8. A, B, and C are doing business together. X would invest Rs. 6500 for six months, Y Rs. 8400 for five months, and Z Rs. 10,000 for three months. X wants to be a working member for which he was to receive 5% of the profits. The profit earned was Rs. 7400. Calculate the share of Y in the profit.
    Answer: Rs. 2660.
    Explanation:  A is entitled to receive 5% of the total profit. The total profit earned is Rs. 7400.

    A's share=5% of 7400=5100×7400=370

    We need to find out how much profit is left after A's share has been deducted.

    Remaining profit=Total profit − A's share = 7400 − 370 = 7030

    Next, we calculate the capital contribution of each partner, taking into account the time for which they invested their capital.

    A's contribution:
    6500 (investment)×6 (months) = 39000

    B's contribution:
    8400 (investment) × 5 (months) = 42000

    C's contribution:
    10000 (investment) × 3 (months) = 30000

    Now, we sum up the contributions of A, B, and C.

    Total contribution = 39000 + 42000 + 30000 = 111000

    Next, we find the ratio of A's, B's, and C's contributions.

    Ratio of A : B : C = 39000:42000:30000

    To simplify this ratio, we can divide each term by 3000:

    Ratio = 13:14:10

    Now, we need to calculate B's share from the remaining profit based on the ratio.

    The total parts in the ratio are:

    Total parts= 13 + 14 + 10 = 37

    B's share in the profit is:

    B's share = (1437) × 7030

    Calculating B's share:

    B′s share=14 × 703037 = 9852037 ≈ 2660

    Thus, B's share in the profit is Rs. 2660.

  9. A boat travels 20 km upstream in 6 hours and 18 km downstream in 4 hrs. What is the boat speed and the speed of the water current?
    Answer: The speed of the boat is 3.9167 km/hr and the speed of the water current is 0.5833 km/hr
    Explanation:

    Speed of boat upstream = 20/6 km
    Speed of boat downstream = 18/4 km = 9/2 km = 27/6 km

    Now, the current is helping the boat down stream. This makes their speed
    combine. For upstream, it is basically the speed of the boat minus the speed of
    the river if you think about it. This results in:

    x + y = 27/6
    x - y = 20/6

    Adding these values:

    x + y = 27/6
    x - y = 20/6

    2x = 47/6
    x = 47/12

    Plugging this into the equation gives:

    x + y = 27/6
    47/12 + y = 54/12
    y = 7/12

    Therefore, the boat's speed is 47/12 km ≈ 3.91km and the current's speed is
    7/12 km ≈ 0.58km.

  10. If the day after tomorrow is a Wednesday, what day was it three days before the day before yesterday?
